Whether you are a soccer fan or not, you’ve surely noticed that the FIFA World Cup Soccer 2010 is happening right now. Th excitement and energy of these games are incredible. The fans are passionate, the announcers are passionate, the players passionate. This makes for great thrills.
While watching I noticed the parallels between soccer and network marketing. I thought it would be a great way for people to understand how they compare to each other.
Soccer is a game in which a team tries to outmaneuver their opponent and run the ball to the opponent’s net and score a goal. On the field is where the players distinguish themselves during game play. Although each player plays a crucial role on the team, there are times that they have control of the ball and run it towards the opponent’s net. Now, if a player always tried to run the ball by himself he would not get too far since he’d be up against the entire opposing team.
In network marketing, much like soccer, trying to run and build your business all by yourself will be difficult. The network marketer will be up against formidable foes in the form of lack of confidence, negative support from family and friends, and possibly inexperience.
1- You play by yourself at times but you play with a team. You’re in business for yourself but not by yourself
In soccer, the idea is to move the ball in one direction: towards the opposing net. Moving the ball away from the opposing team’s net and towards your own net is dangerous and only helps you struggle to protect your net and possibly lose the game. The idea is to keep moving “forward” all the time. Sometimes they have to move the ball back but it’s only to gain position and move it back up the field.
In network marketing, the idea is to keep moving forward. Much like soccer, you have to constantly move forward towards your goal. You may have to go back just a little but only to reposition yourself and then move forward again towards your goal.
2- Soccer players constantly strive to move the ball forward towards the opponent’s goal. You have to constantly move forward towards your goals
In a soccer game, once a team scores they don’t retire and take it easy. The game is not over yet. There are other opportunities to score again, and the opposing team can score on you. So, a soccer team continues and again moves towards the goal to score another goal. They have a set time limit to get as many goals as possible.
In network marketing, once you reach a goal, you don’t stop and retire. This a process. Once you accomplish a goal, you set upon the next goal or you set a new goal to move towards. You only have a set time limit here on earth, as well as with your health. Maximize this time with the best effort to accomplish as many goals during your game.
3- In soccer, they attempt to get as many goals as possible during a set time limit. In network marketing, you should accomplish as many goals as possible in this game of life during the set time limit granted to you by Him
Soccer is a game of constant struggle and maneuvering. The players are always confronted with challenges, set backs, and advancements. The opponents attempt to trip up and block the attacking team. The player(s) do not waiver and quit. They continually and constantly play through the challenges.
As a network marketer you have to keep moving forward in spite of the challenges and set backs that confront you daily. Some people, family, friends, coworkers, and associates will try to trip you up and block you. You have move through them or around them, but always moving forward constantly and continually. There will be improvements and advancements as well as many challenges.
4- A soccer player has to play through challenges and set backs to get advancements. A network marketer has to face challenges and set backs in order to realize advancements, improvements, and achievements
During a soccer game, there are many shots on goal. Not mention shots off target. But, the point is that there will be more shots on goal than actual goal shots. This means that the team tries and tries, again and again to score, no matter how many times they missed before.
In network marketing the same is true. When trying to recruit a prospect you will have more misses than hits, that is you’ll get more “no’s” (a shot on goal) than “yes, I want to join you in business” (a goal). But just because you get some misses, don’t stop until you score a goal. You will.
5- In soccer, there are more shots on goal than actual goals. In network marketing, there may be more misses (no’s) than goals (yeses)
Soccer teams don’t just show for a game without practice. Showing up to a game without first training and practicing is like wanting to lose every game! To make it to the league they have to be good enough. To make it to the playoffs, they’ll have to be good enough. To make it to a championship game, they’ll have to earn it! To win it means they did the very best of what they practiced and trained for: game time.
In network marketing you’ll have to train and practice too. Don’t expect to make a presentation about your product or service without first getting training and practicing. You won’t be very good at it and you will fail. By training and practicing you will build confidence and in the process get better. Once you get better, it will show in your results. When you get really good your income will represent your level. Do you want to stay in the lower leagues or be in the professional leagues with the pro players? Train to be a champion.
6- Soccer players train and practice before they hit the field. Network marketers should train and practice before hitting their prospects
Soccer players are at their peak physical, spiritual, and mental (psychological) state. There is a balance that most professional athletes strive to achieve to perform at their optimal best. By being in the best physical shape along with a mental edge and spiritual awareness, the player is at his best.
A network marketers also need to find balance in their lives. By balancing the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of their lives, they will feel strong and effective. This promotes balanced strength which gives off the energy needed to stay in the game for the duration.
7- Soccer players have a balanced outlook on physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of their total self. Network marketers need to have a balance in their lives in order to have the energy to maximize their potential
Looks like we have a tie. The similarities are quite striking, and this is an exercise in trying to correlate the elements in each. As you can see, the parallels are very similar. This is a way for network marketers, or anyone thinking about joining a network marketing or mlm company to view what elements and attributes they need to have in order to succeed and score goals in this game.
It’s not hard. It’s not easy. It’s just a matter of hard work and constant and continual struggle to move forward towards the goal!
Let’s review the 7 parallels
1- You play by yourself at times but you play with a team. You’re in business for yourself but not by yourself.
2- Soccer players constantly strive to move the ball forward towards the opponent’s goal. You have to constantly move forward towards your goals.
3- In soccer, they attempt to get as many goals as possible during a set time limit. In network marketing, you should accomplish as many goals as possible in this game of life during the set time limit granted to you by Him.
4- Soccer player have to play through challenges and set back to get advancements. A network marketer has to face challenges and set backs in order to realize advancements and improvements.
5- In soccer, there are more shots on goal than actual goals. In network marketing, there may be more misses (no’s) than goals (yeses).
6- Soccer players train and practice before they hit the field. Network marketers should train and practice before hitting their prospects.
7- Soccer players have a balanced outlook on physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of their total self. Network marketers need to have a balance in their lives in order to have the energy to maximize their potential.
